Happy Birthday To Me!

On this day 24 years ago in Hornsby Hospital, Sydney I was born! Mum tells me that it was raining when I entered the world just after midnight on March 16th, so I guess it was fitting that it was raining this morning when I looked out the window. Lets hope the rain sticks around for a while and helps to ease the drought. Thank you to those of you who have called and emailed me today. Your kind wishes are appreciated.

Does anyone know of anything particularly interesting that happened on this day in history, aside from my birth :) ? Please post a comment if you do.

    Dude,

I posted my happy birthday comment under another blog entry because I didn’t realise you had an entry here about your own birthday… until after I commented!

Does that make any sense at all?

Now, let me see… 16 March… the following railway lines or sections were opened in NSW/ACT:
    1928: Murrabit-Stony Crossing (62.1km) [Closed 1943]

I gave up after NSW so there could have been others in other states… but hey, I might have mild Asperger’s but it’s only mild so I am not going to go through the whole almanac!

    Happy birthday dude!

Glenn, Michelle and Zoe. Which one is the aspie?

  2. michael Says:

Thanks Glenn. Trust you to come out with the railway trivia!

  3. Matthew Moffitt Says:

    Happy birthday Michael.

Today is the anniversary of constitutional monarchy in the Netherlands, 1815, and the first FA Cup final was held in 1872, Wanderers F.C. defeated Royal Engineers A.F.C. 1-0 at The Oval in Kennington, London.

By the way, on this day in 1926 Robert H. Goddard launched the first liquid-fuelled rocket at Auburn Massachusetts. The rocket traveled at a speed of 60mph for 2.5 seconds.

  7. michael Says:

Mel - Thanks! I had a great day! That’s a cool piece of trivia as well, which I should probably have known anyway :)

Mike - Thanks for dropping by and leaving a message. Good to see other MW’s out there who have Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Happy birthday for the 29th too! Keep up the great work you are doing with The Clifford Project - its an important service to your community.

I’m 3 days late, but a belated happy birthday to you!

Here’s some things that happened on March 16:

1774 - Birth of Matthew Flinders, circumnavigator of Australia.
1826 - The Australian Subscription Library, the forerunner of the State Library of New South Wales, is founded; it opens, December 1, 1827.
1914 - Fourteen people die in a train accident at Exeter, New South Wales.
2001 - HIH Insurance folds in the largest corporate collapse in Australian history, a Royal Commission and criminal proceedings followed leading to the imprisonment of director Rodney Adler and two additional former executives.

    Happy Birthday mate!

Seems you share a birthday with Josef Mengele… I am sorry, but you asked for it! On the other hand, Richard Stallman was born on that day too. On the gripping hand, Ohm (He of the Law) also, in 1789!

    So there you go…

    Hi Michael,

I found a “very” exciting event on 16th March 1983. There was the C-world cup of Ice Hockey in Budapest. On this very date China played versus Denmark (6:1) and Bulgaria versus Spain (4:4). Ok, I have to admit it’s not the most exciting event but at least it’s one.

Boris - thanks for letting me know I share a birthday with a notorious Nazi war criminal! Great, just great!

Wikipedia (the source of all knowledge?) has a list of events, births and deaths for March 16 which is quite interesting. It can be found here.

I also share my birthday with Vladimir Komarov, who was the first Soviet cosmonaut to travel in space more than once and was also the first human confirmed to have died in space. On his second flight, Soyuz 1, he was killed during the return, when the spacecraft crashed because the parachute failed to open. Apparently, rumours have it that Komarov died cursing the spacecraft designers and flight controllers which is pretty understandable. I hope I don’t meet the same fate as him.
